INHERIT consortium meeting in Visby: Exploring how historic buildings can become more sustainable

From 29 September to 1 October 2026, the INHERIT consortium gathered in Visby, Sweden, for a project meeting focused on reviewing progress, exchanging experiences from the project’s pilot sites and coordinating the next steps as the project moves towards its final phase.

The meeting brought partners together to review the development and deployment of INHERIT’s services, exchange updates on pilot activities, and coordinate the next steps for assessing the project’s overall impacts. It also provided an opportunity to reflect on how the project’s outcomes can contribute to more sustainable and informed approaches to the renovation and preservation of historic buildings.

Our lab’s Director Professor Dr. Alexandros and our colleagues, Dimitra Tzani and  Konstantinos Antonakos, contributed to the meeting through presentations and discussions on key areas of the project.

The team presented the progress of Service 2, the “Modelling & Simulation Environment”, highlighting its workflow, implementation, and application across the INHERIT pilot cases. As part of INHERIT’s decision-support services, the Modelling & Simulation Environment aims to facilitate the assessment of energy performance and support informed decision-making on energy-efficient renovation strategies for cultural heritage buildings.

The team also contributed to discussions on the INHERIT Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, which is now entering its final phase of implementation. With the framework and associated KPIs finalised, the next steps focus on completing stakeholder data collection, applying the framework across the pilot cases, and assessing the project’s overall impacts across the three evaluation layers.

Finally, discussions also addressed the financial sustainability and risk assessment methodology developed within INHERIT, highlighting its contribution to evaluating the long-term viability of renovation interventions and supporting more sustainable, financially feasible, and inclusive approaches to cultural heritage preservation.

The meeting also included a visit to Visby’s historic Old Town, one of INHERIT’s pilot sites and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The visit provided partners with the opportunity to explore the historic environment first-hand and discuss the challenges involved in preserving historic buildings while improving their sustainability and energy performance. Connecting the project’s technical work with the conditions of a real pilot site offered valuable context for the ongoing development and evaluation of INHERIT’s services and tools.

As the project enters its final phase, the consortium will focus on finalising its services, completing pilot activities, and assessing the project’s overall impacts. These efforts aim to translate the knowledge, methodologies, and solutions developed through INHERIT into practical outcomes that support the sustainable renovation and preservation of Europe’s cultural heritage and historic built environment.
