We are excited to announce that our team participated at the 17th Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) Annual Meeting that took place during 4-6 of November in Seoul, South Korea. The event aimed to present and discuss the state of the art in the field of Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), facilitate interaction with collaborating institutions and organisations, and evaluate and revisit the priorities of the IAMC’s community.
The meeting was organised by the Korea Environment Insitute (KEI) and the Graduate School of International Studies at the Yonsei University, with the support of the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Environment and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI).
During the 1st day of the conference, our Director Professor Dr. Alexandros Flamos presented our recent work entitled “Green transition reforms in Greece: Evaluating the effectiveness of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan towards the achievement of national determined contributions and net-zero targets”.
This study, as conducted in the context of the European Commission-funded Horizon Europe project IAM COMPACT, presents the use of the dynamic high-resolution demand-side management model DREEM and of the capacity expansion and energy system planning model OSeMOSYS-GR, which is a country-specific implementation of the OSeMOSYS modelling framework for the case of Greece, to identify the short- and long-term impacts of the investments and reforms related to the energy transition in the Greek residential and power sectors.
According to the study’s results, the current National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP)’s funding in Greece can play an important role in the short term but cannot have significant impacts in long-term decarbonisation efforts in the sectors of interest. Findings of our study suggest that a private investment plan complementing the Greek NRRP should be developed, with clear goals and measurable benefits in value, jobs, and environmental impacts.
