Paving the way for the adoption of the Smart Readiness Indicator into the national regulation and market of six Member States

The Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) is a common EU methodology that rates the smart readiness of buildings (or building units) for their capability to perform three (3) key functionalities: (a) optimise energy efficiency and overall in-use performance, (b) adapt their operation to the needs of the occupants, and (c) adapt their operation according to signals from the grid (to provide demand response services). The SRI was introduced in the 2018 revision of the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) as a way to emphasize the role of smart building technologies – such as technologies for building automation and monitoring of equipment operation – in improving the energy efficiency of buildings and their capability to be active components of the future EU energy system.

The SRI2MARKET project aims at supporting Member States in successfully planning for the rollout of the SRI in their national regulation and markets. In particular, SRI2MARKET will improve the knowledge and capabilities of six (6) Member States: Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Portugal, and Spain.

The project will engage national policymakers and market stakeholders in order to create interest in the SRI and exploit the opportunities that may emerge from it.

The key objectives of the SRI2MARKET project are to: i. Propose public funding schemes to finance SRI upgrades in buildings, by setting up a stakeholder dialogue process with key national power market stakeholders. ii. Develop tools (“SRI2MARKET Tool Suite”) to guide SRI assessors and streamline building assessments. iii. Provide training to EPC assessors on the SRI and the methodology of its calculation. iv. Set up SRI pilots at the national level to identify best practices for SRI assessments. v. Provide recommendations to building owners and facility managers on cost-effective SRI upgrades.
