On the inside of the 3rd “SENTINEL” project’s annual meeting

Entering the last year of the SENTINEL project, our 3rd Annual Meeting was organised by our TEESlab team on the 29th of June and on the 1st of July at Glyfada (Athens Riviera), Greece. The meeting was successfully completed with participants representing all SENTINEL partners and engaging in interesting and constructive discussions on how energy system modelling can efficiently support the energy transition to climate neutrality by 2050 in Europe.

The aim of the meeting was to provide updates on the scientific work and the project progress so far, also considering modelling results for the 3 SENTINEL case studies (Greece, Nordic Region, and Europe as a whole), insights for the further improvement of the SENTINEL Energy Modelling Platform, and planning of next steps moving towards this year’s European Climate and Energy Modelling Platform (ECEMP) conference.

During our two-day meeting, the focus was on presentations of each Work Package (WP). WP leaders provided summaries of the progress of their activities and their contributions to the overall aim of the project. In particular, WP findings, scientific publications, and on-going activities were analysed. The presentations were followed by discussions on links between the WPs in order to enhance the collaboration across the SENTINEL team.

In addition, SENTINEL modelling teams showcased their results emphasising on the different energy transition scenarios for each one of the case studies and the methodologies used on how to identify and address user needs. (You can find the list of SENTINEL models here). Another important aspect that was highlighted was the SENTINEL model intercomparison component, which aims at identifying differences and similarities of the models and comparing models with different scopes and sectoral level of detail.

During the last day of the meeting, Dr. Ingeborg Graabak, Senior Research Scientist (SINTEF), from the OpenENTRANCE project (sister project to SENTINEL) provided an overview of the project’s aim, objectives, as well as implemented and on-going activities. Special focus was given on the OpenENTRANCE Open Modelling Platform, discussing how to gather and integrate different modelling tools and identifying potential synergies with SENTINEL. Our meeting was concluded with partners engaging in fruitful discussions about how to further develop the SENTINEL Energy Modelling Platform to make it more transparent, accessible, and interoperable.
