This presentation showcases the key results of the Greek Case Study on Megalopolis, implemented in the context of the Horizon 2020 TIPPING+ project, and investigates the energy transition options of the region towards a new sustainable energy future.
The ongoing “grey” transition narrative encompasses the photovoltaics feeding electricity to the grid, the construction of a natural distribution network and free of charge natural gas boilers supplied to households.
Alternatively, the TIPPING+ research has concluded to a “green rebranding” narrative that promotes direct photovoltaic electricity covering 90% of power demand, installation of battery energy storage system and heat pumps in all households. The risk of Megalopolis entering a new natural gas lock-in and the benefits of electrification combined with renewable energy and storage for the citizens were analysed in the context of the study.
