Energy system modelling is one of the key components of the assessment of future energy needs and the design of flexible energy systems to meet supply and demand in different regions and communities. Our goal is to use energy system models as means to understand interactions and dependencies between different components of energy systems and to provide solutions to various energy-related problems. We aim to identify opportunities and measures for decarbonisation and sustainable development that can support policymakers in designing and implementing energy policies and fostering the adoption of new innovative technologies.

The design and implementation of energy policies are core elements in achieving climate and energy targets. These policies touch upon several different aspects of the energy transition such as energy efficiency, local, regional and national energy planning, renewable energy projects, etc. We aim to support policymakers in the design and assessment of energy policies by providing analytical research and tools and results from energy system models’ simulations.

Energy efficiency is a driving force in the energy transition. From industries and SMEs to the residential and public sector there is significant potential for energy consumption reduction that can contribute to a more sustainable and resilient energy future. Our work in this domain focuses on innovative financing schemes and business models, policy analysis and measures assessment.

Energy poverty, a multi-dimensional phenomenon, has been defined as a situation where a household is unable to meet its domestic energy needs and is caused by numerous and diverse factors such as low income, high energy expenses, and poor energy efficiency in buildings. Alleviating energy poverty is a key precondition for achieving a just transition and thus, the EU is implementing legislative and non-legislative initiatives to address this issue. We aim to support Member States tackle energy poverty through qualitative and quantitative research and the development of tools that address energy efficiency measures implementation barriers.

Renewable energy is a key pillar of the clean energy transition. Investing in alternative energy sources is essential in order to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. We aim to support the development of state-of-the-art solutions integrating renewable energy sources by employing our TEEM suite in various studies.

Energy citizenship has a vital role in the social transformations towards more sustainable and just societies, that are essential for the ongoing energy transition. We aim to enhance research work in this field through knowledge sharing and co-creation of practices that maximise the number and diversity of citizens that are able to contribute to the energy transition.

Buildings are among the major energy consumers, thus making Europe’s building stock fit for the net-zero greenhouse gas emissions future requires a dramatic decrease in energy consumption and moving away from fossil fuels for heating and cooling. We aim to improve the energy performance in buildings through policy analysis and energy savings and cost-effectiveness assessment of alternative renovation scenarios that can provide valuable insights to all actors involved in the building stock renovation chain.
