10th International Conference on Smart Energy Systems: TEESlab leaves its mark at Day 2 of the event!

The second day of the plenary and parallel sessions of the International Conference on Smart Energy Systems kicked-off with the plenary keynotes on the topics of smart energy systems and heat Pumps as well as on energy security in Europe.

During this second day, our Director, Prof. Dr Alexandros Flamos, presented our team’s work entitled “Bidirectional soft-linking of opensource energy models to evaluate the feasibility of transition pathways to carbon neutrality in the power sector“ co-authored by our colleagues Dr. Vassilis Stavrakas and Nikos Kleanthis and produced within the context of the EC-funded projects ENCLUDE and IAM COMPACT.

This presentation focused on the soft-linking of 2 open-source energy models (OSeMOSYS and Flextool) to provide insights regarding three (3) alternative cost-optimal decarbonisation pathways by 2050 in the power sector. Key outcomes of this study include:

  • Exploring long-term decarbonisation pathways should combine long-term capacity planning with short-term operational assessment to provide feasible solutions.

  • There is path dependency on natural gas in Greece at least until 2033, which could either result in a lock-in effect or lead to stranded assets.

Moving on, Prof. Dr. Alexandros Flamos chaired the session on “CCUS and PtX technologies and the production and use of electrofuels in future energy sustems”, marking another important achievement of our team’s presence at the event.

Overall, this year’s conference was the 10th anniversary of the International Conference on Smart Energy Systems, which is an amazing achievement! Our team is looking forward to the next 10 years!

SAVE THE DATE: The next edition of the International Conference on Smart Energy Systems will take place on 16-17 September, in Copenhagen.
